The Best of the Web for Nonprofits
Hello, everyone! Will spring ever come? We’re sure ready for it in Arlington, VA!
Last month’s edition of Translucence discussed ways to avoid translation project headaches in 2011. But we know you have a lot more on your plate than that this year. Our commitment to your organization’s cause and mission spans much greater than your language services needs. This month, we hunted far and wide for the best online resources to help make this year your best year ever. Check out what we’ve uncovered.
Jumo- Jumo is the social network for nonprofit organizations. Founded by Chris Hughes, co-founder of Facebook and director of online organizing for Barack Obama’s Presidential campaign, it is pretty much guaranteed to be a huge social networking hit. The site allows users to find issues they care about, receive news and updates from organizations and support their work through volunteering and donations.
Since its official launch in November 2010, over 14,000 organizations have registered for Jumo. To see a sample profile, visit Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation’s page here.
Blackbaud- Blackbaud is one of the world’s leading technology vendors for nonprofits. The company’s website includes a massive Nonprofit Resources page which includes free industry blogs, case studies, podcast, reports and newsletters. We’ve found their “White Papers” page
to be a gold mine of information. Blackbaud’s white papers are written by nonprofit industry experts on a wide range of topics including fundraising, website management, prospect research and business intelligence.
Library of Winning Grant Proposals- We had no idea such a thing like this existed! The Library of Winning Grant Proposals belongs to The Grantsmanship Center. Unlike our other great Internet finds, this resource is not entirely free. You can search over 900 grant proposals abstracts for no cost but downloading a proposal costs $29. These top-ranked, federally funded grant proposals provide examples of effective grant writing, program models, best practices and how to construct program budgets.
Nonprofit 911- We’re sure you’ve heard of the Network for Good. But have you heard about Nonprofit 911, their free training series on nonprofit marketing and online fundraising? The website linked here
has hundreds of free webinar trainings archived and available for immediate viewing. The next live webinar. “Lisa Simpson for Nonprofits: What Science Can Teach You About Fundraising, Marketing and Making Social Change”, takes place on March 8th at 1pm EST.
Nonprofit Professionals Forum- The Nonprofit Professionals Forum is a group on LinkedIn with over 5,000 members.
LinkedIn is the largest professional social networking site. The only requirement to join the forum is to be a professional who works in or with nonprofits. Group members use the forum to meet colleagues, stay updated on nonprofit industry news and utilize other members’ experience and expertise when seeking advice, suggestions and feedback. If you’ve yet to get bit by the LinkedIn bug, click here for their New User Guide. While you’re there,
add Sandra to you network.

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is a leading public policy advocacy organization for the prevention of death and disease caused by tobacco usage. Internationally, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids works with governments and non-governmental organizations in implementing policies that reduce tobacco usage and exposure to secondhand smoke, expose and counter tobacco industry efforts to market to children, and empower a tobacco-free generation through youth leadership and activism.
For the last three years, we’ve had the pleasure of serving the organization as their sole translation provider. After translating over four million words for the fight against Big Tobacco, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids has taught us volumes about why accomplishing their mission is critical to the well-being of millions of people. Their work is single-handedly responsible for our commitment to being a smoke-free workplace and why we implemented our agency’s social responsibility policy.
They are currently gearing up for their 16th annual Kick Butts Day taking place on March 23rd in over 1,000 countries. To learn how you can participate, download the 2011 Kick Butts Day Guide here.
Every month, Translucence Newsletter provides cost-cutting techniques you can implement on your next translation project to ensure spending doesn’t get out of control.
This month: Minimize Revisions
Before you send us several pages of revisions, remember that each revision costs your organization extra money. To save money and time, limit revisions to only those that truly affect the content and understanding of the reader.
